| Lately, I have been reading the social media posts of many friends who speak about the bonding power of music. Much of what I have been given in life and most of what I have been able to give back is transmitted via music. This is because music is the disembodied connective tissue of communication. Here is one example of how music has changed my life, added to my life, and connected me to others. When I was young, probably about 5 years old, I have a memory of walking with my parents outside of a movie theater. The movie "The Sting" was in large red letters on the theater marquee. Upon seeing the movie title, I started whistling "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin. In my inexperienced 5-year-old mind, I thought the piece must be called "The Sting" as well. I whistled the notes correctly, as my parents were shocked and said, "Where did you learn that?" I just stated that I had heard it somewhere. I was too young to see the movie, but television, radio, or some other media made me connect the film with the music. I remember this primarily because my family members were surprised a 5-year-old could whistle this seemingly obscure piece of music. What I did not understand then, and have come to understand is that music is a skill built by experience and work. This was only the beginning of the realization I should play music. This blog will be about my memories and continuing journey of musical exploration and community-building through music. |
